A group of four family houses is designed according to client’s specifications presented in the brief. Pedestrians and cars enter the compound via the site road along the north border of the land. Local bays with entrances and car entries into the blocks are attached to this road. A relatively small parcel allocated for four houses predetermines the main idea of this concept. That is to minimise the aboveground parts of the houses and sufficiently separate each house from the others. Each building is composed on a moderately sloping site as an individual structure. By their scale, these houses support the natural character of this location; they are not clustered, as they would thus form a visual or functional barrier. The simple form of the architecture offering the maximum effect of the natural parameters of the location imprints even into the layout concept. Assembling the rooms into functional units (family zone, master bedroom, children’s storey) allows logical linking and precise defining of the relation between these units (the children’s storey is separated from the master bedroom and, on the contrary, the hobby zone is connected to the family zone, etc.). This simple concept of zoning the layout allows defining the relations between each house’s functions exactly in the future and modifying the layouts according to specific ideas of clients. Even now, we define the two basic layout concepts for the aboveground blocks that can be used. Connecting the aboveground block to the underground by a ´joint´ in the form of a staircase will allow some freedom of positioning the aboveground block on the site. The layout concept of each house is in fact divided into two elementary parts. The two-storied part, whose volume is minimised, contains the entrance areas, and a garage for two cars and a storage room or a workshop. There are two smaller bedrooms with a bathroom and a separate toilet on the first floor. The aboveground part is designed in two alternatives differing in layout details. The aboveground part described above rests on a basic, underground block in which we place the family area (a living room, a dining room, and a kitchen) and the private zone with the master bedroom, the study, and their amenities. The underground part accommodates utility rooms (a laundry, a gym, technical rooms, and storage rooms).
